Unbunny: Moon Food

Misery continues to love melody on Jarid Del Rio’s sixth album as Unbunny. He has a voice like a down at heel Neil Young and his songs stand alongside Elliott Smith’s for their painful self-deprecation but he can conjure a dazzling chord sequence or gorgeous, flickering melody that softens the blows of cruel life. ‘Young Men Are Easy Prey’ is an unhappy love song (“young men are easy prey to a girl like her…once she’s in she’ll turn you down”) that typifies his glass-not-just-half-empty-but-completely-dry attitude to life, and 'Winning Streak' naturally contradict its title. Yet while his worldview is bleakly expressed as “there is a design flaw in the human heart”, it’s also beautifully explained; ‘Landslide’ is full of little melodic hooks while the insistent rhythms of 'Straw On A Camel’s Back' underpin sharp and funny lyrics. But then he’s back to his old scarred best, sneering at the domesticity of an ex-lover on ‘February Secret’: “someday baby you’ll settle down with some bullshit husband in some bullshit town”. If you’re missing masters of bittersweet pop music like Smith, Sparklehorse and St Thomas, look no further than Unbunny.
