Beat From Badsville Vol 1 Stag-o-Lee Records 2x10”

The Cramps are the gift that keeps on giving. Not only did they play their own psychotic rockabilly and schlock horror rock’n’roll, they acknowledged their inspirations and resurrected some great tunes in cover versions. You can find the wellspring of Cramps music in the Born Bad vinyl series, the Songs The Cramps Taught Us collections and Lux’s Purple Knif radio show, and this release is an indispensible addition to the Cramps compendia.

Beat From Badsville contains 24 cuts of jaw-dropping music that was apparently cherished by Lux and Ivy. The four themed sides comprise surly teen pop, bizarre novelty songs, insane instrumentals and uncategorisable exotica. They range from Joe Hall and the Corvettes’ rock’n’roll hating ‘Bongo Beating Beatnik’ to The Five Blobs (sort of) appreciation of beauty, ‘From the Top of Your Guggle (To the Bottom of Your Zooch)’, and the casually racist ‘Yea-De-A-Hay’ by Jack Judge (think: Buddy Holly meets Hank Mizell in Jim Davison’s head).

You might know Kip Tyler mighty ‘She’s My Witch’ or Gary ‘Spider’ Webb’s ‘The Cave’ (possibly the weirdest choice for single ever) but there’s much more of that ilk here. It comes from a time when anything could and was recorded and released (admittedly in miniscule amounts) and thanks to the likes of Lux and Ivy, and the good folks at Stag-O-Lee, is available to all again.
