Vox Von Braun - A Record of Two Halves
Vox Von Braun kick off like indiepop archaeologists, lightly brushing away the accrued grime of the Mary Chain’s fuzzpop swagger to make its 50s and 60s pop, rock ‘n roll roots gleam. The best tunes on the album shimmy, sway and sha-la-la in a way that makes the construction of such a missing link seem almost necessary, and certainly massively worthwhile.

But a gear (ahem) change at halfway does them few favours. There’s A Black Rebel Motorcycle Club producer on the credits and suddenly dope smoke clouds around and out stumbles BRMC’s rather underpowered riffology (the main thought on hearing BRMC’s first album was that if anyone’s going to do the Can the Can riffs, you’d rather it was Suzi Quatro, and it’s one that recurs a couple of times here). It’s fine as far as it goes - and Gamma would be approximately 400 times more engaging if the organ that turns up in the last two bars had been employed throughout. But for all that the lips are jutting a bit under a narrowed eye there’s rarely enough oomph before the winsome lilt returns on See You Around, though Pitch Black generates enough of a rolling blissed out groove to buck the trend. It’s possible this second half plays out best live (in a way that BRMC so don’t), but it sits oddly.

Indeed if it hadn’t come via a download code I’d turning the record over and over to check that it wasn’t two different bands. As it is it’s definitely worth a spin to see if you like either of them.
