Welcome Home/ Diggin’ The Universe: A Woodsist Compilation Woodsist Records LP

Article written by Ged M - Aug 8, 2010

Take away the catalogue of Woodsist Records and probably 50% of the content of cult music blogs would disappear. Woodsist, based in Bushwick in NE Brooklyn, is one of the coolest labels in the US, radiating all sorts of great lo-fi noise pop from the likes of Kurt Vile, Ganglians and The Babies (Cassie Ramone’s Vivian Girls side project), but it’s seemingly all done without strategy or contracts - owner Jeremy Earl just puts out music he likes on the basis of a handshake with artists. And his compilation of “bands I’m digging” (his rationale for releasing music) is a cool but catholic selection.

As well as nu-folk from his own band (Woods), this record takes in Texan-style garage rock (the brilliant ‘Heel. Toe.’ by The Fresh and Onlys), introspective Neil Young-style guitar rock (Alex Bleeker’s ‘Getting By’), ramshackle C86 punkpop from Cause Co-Motion (very DIY TVPs) and the backwoods folk of Ducktails’ ‘Sun Out My Window’. It’s a pretty varied but satisfying selection, topped by Nodzzz’s Fall-like staccato masterpiece ‘Old Clothes’ and Moon Duo’s drone-rock-meets-dub ‘A Little Way Different’. That’s the best tune but also the best of the three covers on here (originally a reggae tune by Errol Dunkley), although Skygreen Leopards’ melancholic, melodic treatment of the Cure’s ‘Catch’ comes close. And it all seems to have taken a direct path from the fingers and larynxes of the musicians to the ears of the listener – no production cheats (sometimes perhaps no production at all), just lovely lo-fi, no-frills pop with a little bit of tape hiss on some tracks. The album’s only on vinyl and download, and there are no free MP3s to simplify the listening, but the quality and creativity of the songs makes this a perfect snapshot of underground America today.
