Lewisham-based William arrived seemingly eons ago with a corker of a debut single; one that made you want to dance stupidly, scream wildly and break furniture. And all under three minutes; the perfect single, some might say. Said song, Five Minute Wonder, also opens the album and it remains the band’s best track by miles. That’s not to say there’s nothing else here worth your time, indeed any modern punk-rock LP would gladly welcome the dishevelled gems that are Playground and Aperture.
Five of the album’s ten tracks have been kicking around for at least a year, and apart from a minor tinkering (speeding up) for former flipside Porco Dio Vs Schweinehund, they appear untouched. The stop /start guitars and stomping rhythms, along with the increasingly shrieky vocals all intact and in abundance.
The newer material follows the same pattern, albeit less successfully; they lack the punch and catchiness of the first two singles (and accompanying B-sides). The exception being the oddly titled and incredibly infectious ERRR...Lee where the band once again find the right blend of shouty vocals, throbbing bass and frenetic guitar. However, what this album really needed was a bit more variation, a change of pace; something that allowed vocalist Gavin Housley to merely sing along to, rather than yelp at.
Still, there’s enough here to make this an enjoyable and promising debut.
