Zulus
Zulus Aagoo Records

Article written by Ged M - Aug 29, 2012

zulus.jpg
Zulus are a Brooklyn band, whose songwriting members Daniel Martens and Aleksander Prechti have previously played in post-hardcore bands but have decided to create a more aurally acceptable “post-garage” outfit. Zulus’ music is still fairly hardcore, particularly the pummelling rhythms and scything guitars, but there’s more of a melodic handle to hold onto. The best track, ‘Tremelo’, is the most hardcore, full of an aggressive fuzzed up scream that sounds like an amplified angry wasp’s nest. 'Kisses’ has Wire’s propulsive post-punk rhythms and the driving beat and melodic distortion of ‘Spear’ resembles Mission of Burma. It’s still generally loud, sludgy and uncompromising (the vocals especially) but offsets its doomy demeanour with a few chinks of post-punk melody.
