Whether the reformation of two thirds of Hefner (Darren and Jack) for shows playing their old songs in June and the reissue of this, their second album, are linked is unclear, but regardless, that month certainly promises to be a great month for fans of thoughtful, intelligent indie. First released in 1999, the Fidelity Wars has always remained the fans favourite; less commercial than the material that followed it, it is Darren's fictional (though influenced by personal events of the time) record of how he loved and lost a girl, capturing in all the gory detail the physical and emotional highs and lows.
For most of us it's an opportunity to blub once more along with our angst-filled raconteur as he recounts through a haze of lust, liquor and Lamberts, diary like, the minutaie of why he loved her and how he messed up, to a fairly simple guitar riffed backdrop. It's glorious stuff, even now, nine years later but what makes this purchase essential are the extras; all 29 of them, including 19 previously unreleased, pulled from the Hefner Heart EP, b-sides and various rehearsal and 4 track recordings. Copious notes about the album and events of the time can also be found on the Hefner site and are well worth a read (see link below).
