The Hepburns
How the Fallen Are Mighty Radio Khartoum

The Hepburns - Mighty
I’ve got very vague and possibly inaccurate recollections of the Hepburns from ages ago as the sort of speccy indie types who studiously avoided all the fraggly bouncing that was prevalent at the time. How The Fallen Are Mighty kicks off with short swinging 60s instrumental before confirming that memory with jangly guitar and mannered Go-Betweensy vocals. But any fears of earnestness are quickly quoshed. The lyrics are acutely humorous (the album title rather sets the tone), sometimes whimsical and many of the tunes are just as much fun. ‘Cos they don’t just stick to the indie template (One More Notch On the Bedpost is almost a full-on comedy song, all jaunty rhythm and oomph horns, there's doo wop swing and all sorts else.

In fact right the way through it’s a catalogue of fine songwriting that the more fresh-faced hordes of indiepopsters would give their right arms for - light of touch without being lightweight and just a pleasure to listen to really.
