The Wave Pictures
Instant Coffee Baby Moshi Moshi

Article written by Paul M - Apr 18, 2008

Wave Pictures
Wave Pictures
As a place to see great live music, London is probably second to none but as a source for interesting local acts it's comparitively poor with far too many Libertines wannabes and Lily Allen clones cluttering our venues. Luckily there are exceptions and the Wave Pictures are definitely one of them (even if they have been borrowed from Loughborough). To avoid the pitfalls marked "Chas" and "Dave", they've looked across the Atlantic, and specifically the arty Manhattan scenes of the 60s and 70s for influences. With The Velvets and Jonathan Richman the most obvious references the results are lo-fi and guitar led ballads. Musically, the songs may be fairly simple but it's the oddball lyrics that capture the attention; usually about relationships and frequently laugh out loud ("I'll buy you bras instead of pickled eggs / Chocolate instead of chutney.../ Next time I remember your birthday") they'll go down a treat with fans of Hefner and Herman Dune. All in all, Instant Coffee Baby is a forty five minute blend of folk tinged fun that is guaranteed to linger a lot longer than any brief caffeine hit.
