It was in a venue part-seedy, part-plush, in a tacky sort of way, that Angus & Julia Stone played their first London show since returning from their native Australia. Word seems to have been spreading about this talented sibling duo, as the atmosphere was electric and even The Magic Numbers' Romeo Stodardt had heard the word.
Needless to say, Angus & Julia Stone had some pleasing to do. Julia set her stall out early and in a fit of pique brought her impassioned vocals from out of their shell with a delivery verging on the emotionally torn. It's apt that Hollywood was the track in which the larger than normal band were joined by a trio of violinists, a cellist, drummer and bass bringing a fuller sound to the performance. The somewhat kooky nature of Julia's onstage presence was highlighted by a delightful one-handed trumpet solo in Private Lawns which even a risky trip into hip hop style delivery couldn't diffuse. This got surprised chuckles rather than howls of derision and it's the band's unadulterated charm that got them through.
Angus' turn soon came to take over vocal duties and had a much more laconic style of delivery, full of tenderness. Paper Aeroplanes’ tale of a love letter is a definite crowd favourite. The pair's dynamic was interesting to observe, with Julia dancing as if floating on a summer's breeze whilst Angus sang. The insistent Silver Coin was his turn to show he could deliver lines of understated passion and when he sung "and I'll miss you when you're gone" the honesty couldn't be missed. With last single, The Beast, Mango Tree and perma-closer Here We Go Again finishing the set, everything that the band encapsulate was in evidence: beautiful harmonies, understated, yet driving drums, lazy summer evenings and passion infused vocals which goosebump the skin.
And so it was that a set begun by delicately duelling guitars, as the pair stood inches apart, was finished in the same way and although they told us that "change is over us now, like one big cloud", they are most definitely the silver lining.
