Bricolage/ The Wave Pictures/ Wake The President
London, Buffalo Bar

Article written by Ged M
Dec 10, 2007.

We missed Falling and Laughing but I suspect we know exactly what they sound like. Wake The President continue the Scottish theme of the night with an edgy, nervy, janglesome set, that is part Smiths and part Orange Juice. It’s topped off with a cover of Talking Heads’ ‘Psycho Killer’, which is good but predictable; their own songs are overtaking that one in impact these days. Still, it maintains the link with Caledonia – David Byrne was after all born in Dunfermline.

Dave Tattersall from The Wave Pictures claims that 4 years residence In Glasgow is enough to establish your celtishness. Maybe so but, rather than the sound of Young Scotland, their set puts you in mind of their friends Herman Düne and Darren Hayman and, perhaps, the Only Ones for their sophisticated new wave moves. They have energy and directness and their deftness of playing – David T rips out a ukulele solo as if he’s playing a lead guitar – all amount to the best set I’ve seen in ages. They’ve been steadily gathering fans and critical approval and they’re currently unmissable.

Bricolage have undergone a change in line up since we last saw them: Wallace Meek has moved on and Darren Cameron – maintaining the highest standards in knitwear/quiff combos even though his fellow cardi-fan has left the band – has moved over to guitar and vocals, while there’s a new silent bass player, Chris. This is dancey, angular, funk-inflected indiepop; 'Footsteps' is as good as ever and new song 'Lucinda Said' shows that they can still write quality songs but there's a new and slightly awkward dynamic about the band in their new configuration. Maybe they'll grow into it but on tonight's performance, the English band wins the battle.
