British Sea Power gigs are always an exciting prospect because you never know quite what to expect. The band makes a point of playing in towns and venues that are off the radar of your typical rock band, and after playing at the UK’s highest pub and on a boat sailing down the River Mersey during their last tour, tonight’s stop at Kendal Brewery Arts Centre is par for the course.
A homecoming of sorts, BSP seem to be on one last push for glory with their latest album and tour, and tonight’s show sees the intensity of their performance cranked up a notch from previous viewings. Kicking off with ‘Lights Out for Darker Skies’ and swiftly moving into previous singles ‘Atom’ and ‘Remember Me’, the crowd are in raptures and it seems the lack of a crash barrier and security are adding to the chaos and manic atmosphere which the band are clearly feeding off.
The set is a mix of the old and new, with a healthy dose of the latest album mixed in with previous singles such as ‘Please Stand Up’ and ‘Spirit of St. Louis’ that satisfies the long-serving fans as well as those new to the band. The chant of ‘Easy, easy’ precedes the boys launching into forthcoming single ‘No Lucifer’ before finishing with the epic ‘True Adventures’ followed by a medley of early single ‘Carrion’ and an extended rock jam that sees guitarist Noble attempting to crowd surf under one of the lowest ceilings I’ve ever seen. All in an evening’s work for one of the UK’s most unique bands. On this sort of form it would seem that the sanitised arena venues will be their reward… but will this take away from the BSP experience? We’ll have to wait and see.
