Broken Records / Story One
Hoxton, The Macbeth

Article written by Paul M - Sep 26, 2008

The Macbeth is a new venue to me, yet another one that's deep in the heart of Hoxton. Like many around here, music is not the priority for some of the attendees, too many of whom are merely here to be seen to be here, and actually paying scant attention to the antics on the stage. It's a Levis Ones to Watch night and there are at least two video camera crews prowling around, interviewing the all too willing vacuous Nathan and Natalie Barleys.

Story One are the first act I see. Pruned down to a three piece tonight and bassless, they are indie rock at its most bland. My friend claims they're the worst band he's ever viewed which is a tad extreme, especially as I know he's seen Reflections of a Bull. The vocalist tries to portray sincerity as he delivers his corny lyrics but his mawkish voice merely grates. His piano playing is equally poor; keys are thumped like a chimp let loose in Argos and it's only when he plays the violin that you realise he's not totally inept, he's just a very good string player who doesn't recognise his limitations. When he announces "This is like playing in my living room" (so he has a lounge that's 100 foot long, has a 50 foot bar and is usually brimming with airheads?), I realise he's truly deluded. A hamfisted version of Grandaddy's classic A.M 180 is the rancid cherry on the festering cake that is Story One. I wasn't impressed by the way...

Edinburgh's Broken Records, on the other hand, were a band I had been looking forward to seeing immensely. With their two cracking singles having whittled down my turntable needle to the size of an aphid's tadger already this year, it promised to be rather cheeky. Sadly, it wasn't. The singles, particularly If the News Makes You Sad, Don't Watch It were as uplifting and sumptuous as I remembered with the violin, cello and trumpet adding layers of blissed out joy to the perfect orchestral pop. Unfortunately too much of the rest of the set however is just a barrage of sonic waffle, melodies drowned in waves of blunt post rock riffage. There's potentially a very good band buried beneath the noise, they just need to learn that sometimes less is more.
