David J Roch
London, Bowery

Article written by Elisabetta P - Dec 19, 2011

David J Roch
David J Roch
David J Roch is not a man of our times.

An undertaker by day and a singer songwriter by night, he evokes the passion and melancholy of a Romantic poet tinged with the drama of a troubadour.

The album ‘Skin and Bones’ filters the raw emotion of traditional ballads, powered by the strength of his voice which can take you on a journey from uplifting heights to the dark depth of his soul.

At the Bowery, if the venue could not add to the spirit of Christmas, the band’s banter and joint effort to wear Christmas jumpers gave a lighter turn to the poignant nature of the performance.

Songs like ‘Evil’s Pillow’ and ‘The Devil Don’t Mind’ display in full the emotional depths of his voice. His range demonstrates confidence but it is the rawness and frailty in his voice that capture the atmosphere. The repeated lament, “..Drown, Drown..”, in ‘Dew’ keeps an hypnotic grip on you, and the presence of a trumpet in ‘Skin and Bones’ adds gravitas to the performance.

David J Roch and his band offered a genuinely moving performance. With no affectations, it’s left to the voice and the music to speak.
