Dum Dum Girls/ A Grave With No Name
London, Lexington

From the Spectorish-60s sounding tones of their songs you might expect a certain tweeness of dress, but the only break in Dum Dum Girls’ black gothic appearance is Bambi’s red hair and the long, long legs exposed by the short, short skirts. Being professional, I immediately closed eyes and opened ears to the band’s sound: a fuzzpop mix of girl group, garage band and punk, combining the Ronettes, Ramones and Stooges. The strength of the set is the dramatic tension in the songs between the warmth of the Californian sun under which they gestated and the darkness of their themes; it starts with their droning, etiolated version of the Stones’ ‘Play With Fire’ and features songs from the forthcoming album, of which the fiery incarceration tale ‘Jail La La’ is a stand out. Dee Dee worked largely by herself on recordings but she has a touring band for live work: on guitar the angular-haired Jules, a San Diego furniture designer, the aforementioned Bambi playing bass, a non-profit worker from Austin and, on drums, Ms Frankie Rose, ex Vivian Girl, current Crystal Stilt and solo performer. It sounds great, they look uber-cool and, from his lonely prison cell, a certain murderous wig-wearing production legend proves that bad men can inspire great things.

A Grave With No Name conceal their lack of ideas behind a wall of noise. Admittedly their drummer broke his hand and is now posing on guitar while the stand-in drummer clearly doesn’t know the songs, but there are weird moments when a song breaks off, suddenly, just as it should be developing into something more interesting. Their music sounds like bedroom pop taken beyond its comfort zone, and perhaps its crepuscular charms would sound better in the bedroom, but it leaves me feeling like I’ve seen a gang of Shoreditch scenesters who’ve decided that fuzz is where it’s at this week.
