Fabienne Delsol/ Piney Gir/ Cee Bee Beaumont
London, 100 Club

Article written by Ged M - Oct 18, 2010

The 100 Club is Fabienne Delsol’s only UK show in support of ace new LP ‘On My Mind’ so maybe what’s making us sticky is just the white heat of expectation and not the 100 Club’s lack of aircon (“we didn’t have it for the Who in 1964” I hear the ghosts say). Anyway, as has now been medically proven, us males have to sweat it out while the ladies merely gently glow, yet discomfort is forgotten once Fabienne and her band take to the stage. She looks the part, petite with big beehive hair and a dress so 60s-pitch-perfectly-evocative that you almost expect to be watching her in black and white with a YouTube logo in the corner of your vision. She and her band play a mixture of yé-yé, Kinks-y vintage English pop and garage-rock, drawing songs from her three solo records and her time with the Bristols. All are short, melodic and with economical playing; the lead guitarist (Ed Turner, I presume) adds some magic touches but everything obeys the 3 minute rule of pop. ‘Laisse Tomber Les Filles’ reminds us of her cultural heritage, ‘I’m Gonna Catch Me A Rat’ shows off the slinky garage rhythms and the psych-pop ‘On My Mind’ proves that she’s still making great music 14 years since trekking the 405 miles from Limoges to London. Formidable!

Set list: To You/ Laisse Tomber Les Filles/ I’m Gonna Haunt You/ I feel So Blue/ Our Love Will Still Be There/ I’m Not A Bad Girl/ Take Your Seat/ Baby I Got News For You/ On My Mind/ Leave Her For Me/ Loot/ Vilaines Filles Mauvais Garcons/ Chills And Fever/ Mr Mystery/ I’m Gonna Catch Me A Rat/ Le Roi Des Fourmis/ When My Mind Is Not Live

Piney Gir’s set fuses country with rock’n’roll, fitting neatly into place between the other two artists tonight, and showing Jesus Wept as being the best Piney album to date. Despite a slight lyrical forgetfulness during the otherwise rousing ‘Sheriff of St Miguel’, the flood tale ‘Great Grey Belly’ is a current favourite for marrying melody to apocalyptic imagery in best country style while the awful-purdy ‘Lucky Me’ is surely soundtrack-bound with its swaggering pop feel.

The reformed Cee Bee Beaumont are an instrumental trio who were at their height in the 90s when, as their portrait on the Damaged Goods website makes clear, they looked like dashing and svelte guitar gods! Now they’re a little more…worldly, shall we say (Chef Butch possibly eats more drumsticks than he bangs), but their music’s still powerfully raw and visceral, even if one guitarist says “the old magic’s still there, just not all of the notes”! It takes a direct infusion from the Pirates' mighty arsenal, unadulterated by effects and unsullied by solos, just pure heartstopping, foot-tapping pop.
