Gig Review

Field Music
London, Kings College Student Union

Field Music are like a fixed point in music. No matter what the current trend, they have always had a pretty consistent approach to their work that has finally managed to bring them a wider audience but that has also maintained the accolades from critics through the years.

Their consistency stems from an uncompromising attitude to their sound, a perfect blend of melodic pop and post punk sharp beats. It’s pure sophisticated understatement that comes across on the albums and manages to be replicated on stage. No rock ‘n’ roll robes or attitudes, just some blokes on a stage doing what they do best. If in the past the smaller group consisting of David and Peter Brewis and Andrew Moore made it difficult for Field Music to achieve their signature sound live - with many a swap of instruments between the Brewis brothers - the addition to the band of Kev Dosdale on guitar and with Andrew Lowther on bass has made sure that the songs and the gig could flow more smoothly without losing charm of the their usual banters while tuning instruments on stage.

The band announced that they were going to play mainly new songs, but the set turned out to be a good balance of old and current material, with ‘(I keep thinking ) About a New Thing’ and ‘Ce Soir/Just Like Everyone Else’ and ‘How Many more Times’ as the standout pieces from their latest album ‘Plumb’. New tight, skeletal yet captivating beats that are met by old crowd pleasers like ‘If Only the Moon Were Up’ and ‘The House is not a Home’ and the ‘Them That Do Nothing’, which draw large cheers from the audience.

As the final night of their UK tour, the set was slightly short for a band with such a great catalogue of songs, but inspiring and exciting nevertheless. Another great example of ingenious musical minimalism.
