The Blanche Hudson Weekend/ The Bracelettes
Brixton, The Windmill

Article written by Ged M - Oct 17, 2011

The Blanche Hudson Weekend have undergone a few changes since we last saw them. They're a fivesome now, they’ve shaved off the thick fuzz that coated their noisepop tunes and, more dramatically, Darren's given up strong lager for strong cider, as if he's trying to channel Lou Reed via Adge Cutler. And it all works, except perhaps the Bulmers. The live sound is still fast and frantic and obsessed with the Velvet Underground, but feedback and sampling is limited to between-song moments, leaving more space for influences like Spector and the Ronettes to burst through. There’s also more of Caroline upfront in the mix, although not as much as on record, given the limitations of the Windmill’s sound. A broken guitar barely slows them down; the BHW are as quick and deadly as ever, and giving up their reliance on fuzz has just made the songs that much hook-sharper than before, on this evidence.

The bass player’s Reatards t-shirt captures the sound of the Bracelettes – fast and noisy US-style punk-pop. Tokyo girls Satori and Ayako rock and wail while drummer Mark pounds out the rhythm like a Duracell bunny on cheap speed – a camera would just record a blur of thrashing limbs. But under that shell of punk energy lies a core of pure pop.
