Recently shorn of two members and down to a more manageable four-piece, These Eyes Are Cameras are something of an anomaly on the Manchester unsigned scene. Based around the acoustic strumming of frontman Cavan, the group play a beautiful blend of folksy indie-pop that incorporates mandolin, flugel and, courtesy of the beautiful Elena, violin.
A sparse crowd are here, partly because of the early start, partly because the Spice Girls tour is in town, but TEAC set about adding those present to their increasing fanbase. Kicking off with a new song that wouldn’t be out of place on a Bright Eyes record, the band move seamlessly through a 30 minute set which takes you on a rollercoaster ride of love, loss, promise and hope. I get the feeling that the songs would be better heard against the backdrop of a quaint coffee shop or rural pub with log fires burning than the urban underground of the Roadhouse, but beggars can’t be choosers and I’m happy to lose myself in their world of romance for half an hour. Cavan’s lyrics and delivery lend an almost poetic edge to the show, and it’s definitely a signature trait for the band.
They finish with ‘Sacred Blue’ from their downloadable self-released E.P. and inform the crowd that they’ll soon be setting off on a short tour of the United States where they will be supporting Mike Borgia. On this form I don’t see why they won’t be touring the US in their own right before too long.
