Gig Review

Widowspeak/ Model Village/ Slushy Guts
Brixton, Windmill

Article written by Ged M - Dec 5, 2011

The worst I can say about Widowspeak is that their quiet presence, that intense understatement that works so well on their brilliant Captured Tracks album doesn’t translate as easily to a raucous Friday night Windmill. Partly it’s Molly Hamilton’s sore throat that means she daren’t risk her voice by projecting, but the lack of volume to overcome the Friday copping-off chatter disappoints some in the crowd relatively close to the stage. Otherwise they’re fantastic, confirming the quality of their debut record. From my vantage spot near the stage, Holly’s sultry vocals are audible but still a little whispery, but I also see the look of rapture on guitarist Rob Thomas’ face as he plays his economical lines. As on record, ‘In the Pines’ and 'Gun Shy' stand out as examples of spare but powerful songwriting and they blast through a wonderful version of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’. They conquer many hearts tonight but are still outdone by the Brixton bearpit that is Friday night in the Windmill.

Model Village, from Cambridge and London, are indiepoppers inspired by Belle and Sebastian. Their music is neatly melodic, well-defined and slightly earnest but I’d be stuck if you asked me to whistle a single chorus. But they were having fun and we weren’t bored, so it doesn’t really matter.

I’ll never wear a band t-shirt to a gig again after getting a ragging from the lead singer of Slushy Guts, who’s wearing the same one! It’s one that he designed for his other band because the Guts’ frontman is Steve from Dignan Porch (aka artist Chaos vs Cosmos). Like his art, his asymmetrical indiepop is unsettling and sometimes challenging but oddly attractive in places, drawing on the avant-rock of people like Jim O’Rourke and fuelled in equal parts by hysteria, introspection and a desire to melt pop into weird new shapes.
