The Futureheads
Coventry, Warwick University

Article written by Paul D
Jan 21, 2008.

After a while out of the public eye everyone’s favourite hounds of love, The Futureheads brought their bass driven punk to the students and locals of Coventry’s Warwick University.

Local warm ups Sirens Call and tour buddies Grammatics gave a great account of themselves and I heartily recommend you check the latter out on the Leeds based label Dance To The Radio, home of last year’s chart flirters The Pigeon Detectives.

The chat at the merch desk was based around the set and whether it would be a mix of all 3 albums (new album This is Not The World is released in May on the band’s own label Nul Records), and that new single Beginning of the Twist had been showcased on Radio 1 during the day.

The band took to the stage with lead singer and guitarist Barry Hyde resplendent in waistcoat, dickey bow and no shirt, along with his customary grey jeans and doctor martens. They looked ready to rock and roll, but, after opening with usual showstoppers Decent Days and Nights and then The City Is Here For You To Use, guitarist Ross Millard said he expected more from a Market place on a Friday night. Barry tried to entice the crowd to dance by displaying his usual nifty footwork to the band’s recent free download Broke Up The Time to no avail, and after a similarly polite response to another new song Think, the band instructed the crowd to respond to the only song played from the 2nd album, Skip to The End. Suddenly the atmosphere changed into a genuine punk show and the whole crowd jumped up and down as one. This carried on into Everything’s Changing and resulted in a genuine ruck between a middle aged crowd surfing man and one of the hardest looking girls I’ve ever seen. The band stopped whilst the man was wrestled to the ground and ultimately (and rather brutally) escorted out. Barry then dedicated ‘the next song to the meathead who’s just been thrown out’ – aptly Stupid and Shallow, the crowd lapped it up.

The remainder of the show comprised of new album title track This is not the World, Meantime, Radio Heart (ska and reggae influences anybody?), He Knows, Beginning of The Twist displaying perfect pop at its best and then, maybe pandering to the now baying crowd, Hounds of Love followed by 2 other early crowd pleasers Carnival Kids (my personal favourite) and Man Ray. Piece of Crap was reprised (as a personal request of the tour manager, Ollie) as the encore to leave the masses happy and sweaty, until next time.

A polished performance all round, and one that will have folks looking forward to the album. Maybe next time they (the crowd) will join in from the start.
