Eye eye! Dan Michaelson hits the blindspot

Article written by Paul M - Jan 23, 2013

Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards release their new album ‘Blindspot’ on 25 March 2013 on The state51 Conspiracy label.

Whilst Dan Michaelson's 2011 album ‘Sudden Fiction’ saw him decamp to Marfa, Texas to create a sparse, bare boned lament to failing love, his new record ‘Blindspot’ sees a return to familiar territory for an album about coming home and picking up the pieces.

Recorded between stints of touring with I Am Kloot and Phosphorescent, and scoring his first feature film, ‘Blindspot’ is a subtle reflection on what is left in the peripheries; the title ‘Blindspot’ referring to the unknown and what we didn’t account for, even though it is only just out of sight and understanding.

"You're scared of growing old without someone who knew you were beautiful before.." from ‘Every Fold and Crease’.

Though ‘Blindspot’ retains much of the sparse and bareboned intimacy of its predecessor, there are moments here when songs swell to bursting point with Cellos and French Horns, almost celebrating victory , before recoiling to expose Michaelson's voice again .

Through the course of 8 songs, ‘Blindspot’ steps carefully and thoroughly through hope, loss, optimism and heartbreak, only to come full circle and face the situation afresh. How to move on.

Dan is currently on tour with Beth Orton.
