Malcolm Middleton releases his ditty about the nation’s drinking habits, ‘Blue Plastic Bags’ on 28th April on Full Time Hobby... and, yes, you guessed it on blue vinyl as well as boring mp3 format.
This three-minute polemic takes British drinking culture as inspiration to produce an oddly unifying, life-affirming track. Sample lyric: "You know there is no shame, because we’re all feeling the same."
"Surely everyone understands the longing, despair, contentment, self-contempt and confusion in this song," says Middleton. "As a nation, we're all drinking too much. Not the binge drinking of the ‘90s, but the sneaky, innocent couple every night. If the fridge is empty at 9.30pm, you start sweating and run out and buy some for just in case."
The single is taken from Middleton’s newly released album, ‘Sleight Of Heart’. A low-key collection of covers and (largely) acoustic originals, it’s the work of a prolific artist at the height of his powers.
One of those covers is Middleton’s interpretation of King Creosote’s ‘Marguerita Red’. Here, on the B-side of ‘Blue Plastic Bags’, King Creosote himself (the man formerly known as Kenny Anderson) returns the complement, covering Middleton’s Choir, a cut from 2005’s career-defining ‘Into The Woods’ album.
