The Triffids
Calenture Domino Recordings

Article written by Elisabetta P - Feb 19, 2007

The sun never fully shone on The Triffids.
If calling their third album Calenture - the ancient term for sunstroke - might have suggested a protracted basking in the sun of the charts, The Triffids never made it big out of their native Australia, despite praise in the press and their cult status in Europe.

As their most ambitious and opulent work receives the
re-master treatment accompanied by a second CD of demo material almost two decades after its original release, it comes as natural to wonder why Calenture never conquered worldwide appeal the first time around. Glacial and sophisticated pop with a passionate yet cold delivery by David McComb set the tone for the soaring opener Bury Me Deep In Love. Hints of love for electronica skilfully set the music platform over which the refrain of A Trick of the Light imposingly builds up. The pop hooks of Hometown Farewell Kiss offer a stark and inviting contrast against the Celtic anger in the lyrics frozen in business, frozen in love in the internal monologue of the dead man in Jerdacutupman.

Filling the production gaps of its two predecessors, Calenture revels in music and vocal theatrics that give a visit to the British Museum a new fascinating dimension.
