A Lonesome Time Vol 1

If this is the state of independence, then they can expect a lonesome time most of the time. There�s a line between self-expression and self-indulgence, art and exhibitionism and too many �artists� here transcend it badly. Once technology acted as a first filter for music; now equipment is so cheap that you can record without ideas or inspiration (and this lot do). Too much of this record sounds like a therapy session for the tuneless and witless.

It breaks down into the good (four tracks), irredeemably bad (most of the 13 others, especially the woeful poetry) and unintentionally hilarious (the line �let me see your knockers� in the pisspoor Streets ripoff 'Get Yer Tits Out' from Brains and Virgin). The best includes The Chemistry Experiment�s reworking of 70s pop (Saint Etienne would understand), The Babyskins� sweet Breeders touches and Ciccone�s rousing punky pop. Sgt Buzfuz proves what can be done with decent production and some nicely barbed lyrics; by contrast, the Bobby McGees have half a bright idea (a cover of the Monkees� �Mary, Mary� with new �urban� lyrics) and make a shit sandwich of it. Meanwhile, The Rebel plays scratchy country in a White Stripes way; that is, if Jack White was addicted to turps and Meg had hooks instead of hands.

It sounds depressing but a 25% strike rate is probably good going in indie terms. Proceed with caution and fear the prospect that there could be a volume 2 . If you need to know more, the address is alonesometime@yahoo.com
