Demo Review

Auto Radar
Keep Searching (demo)

Article written by Ged M
Mar 6, 2005.

Auto Radar in these five tracks are hard to pin down but, at best, they sound like a strange hybrid of Beck, Beefheart and the Streets, playing seriously skewed blues and brooding alt.country music, all shot through with mutant electronica. ‘Keep Searching’ is the killer track here, an exotic blues with Piney Gir (who’s “feeling good, like Natalie Wood”) providing the cool vocals and yodelling. The Piney connection is explained by Dave Howell being a member of her Country Roadshow, while the song has shades of the Bees and even Gomez. ‘No Horse Town’ combines some Beck Hansen urban poetry with a wondrous melodic chorus while ‘Cardboard Blues’ sounds like an alt country Mike Skinner backed by banjo, harmonica and pedal steel. That combination of styles and influences constantly throws you off balance and cleverly makes the EP anything but boring.
