Fanfarlo are on the radar of any ‘zine worth its salt and needless to say SoundsXP has pillars of the stuff. We cuddled up in a cyber stylee recently…
SoundsXP: I've not read it so I don't know but, be honest now, is the short story fanfarlo really worth naming a band after?
Fanfarlo: Yes! "La Fanfarlo" is a nice long short story, definitely worth a read. Step back in time to 1847! Also, "Winston Smith" just didn't have the same ring to it!
SoundsXP: Are Fanfarlo always to be found nose deep in a good book?
Fanfarlo: Nearly always. When we're not holding instruments we're most likely reading Tom Robbins, Vonnegut, The Stool Pigeon... Mark has been reading the 'Penguin History Of The World' for two years now and is currently up to about 1600AD.
SoundsXP: The stuff you've produced so far is unbelievably lush, delicate and sensuous but do you ever get an urge to rock out?
Fanfarlo: We do tend to make a bit more noise on stage than we do recorded. Having said that, our next single is sounding a lot bigger and punchier than anything we've released so far. As Amos would say, "It's going to be phatter than Buddha".
SoundsXP: Clearly you have a penchant for the music coming out of North America but are there any London bands currently doing the rounds that Fanfarlo tip their hat to?
Fanfarlo: Finlay, Shimmy Rivers and the Canal, My Sad Captains... There are so many great bands around London at the moment and it's really nice that we're gradually getting to meet them and play gigs with them.
SoundsXP: What tunes are currently floating your boat?
Fanfarlo:
Leon: Bonnie Prince Billy
Amos: Sleeping States
Simon: Elvis Perkins
Cathy: Midlake
Justin: Cajun music
Mark: Mogwai
SoundsXP: When can we expect an album?
Fanfarlo: We're starting to think about it all now, but it's going to take some time to find a studio with a 256 track mixing desk to accommodate the ever-increasing number of instruments we like to make sounds with.
SoundsXP: I read in an old piece that you were a duo but on Myspace and at the last gig I saw you play there was half a dozen in the band. So who are Fanfarlo, the band?
Fanfarlo: Fanfarlo was once a duo, but that's only because we hadn't all met each other yet. Now we are a happy balance of Simon singing and playing guitar, Amos drumming, Justin playing bass, Leon blowing his trumpet and playing some piano, Cathy playing violin, glockenspiel, synth and anything else she can get her hands on, and Mark playing guitar and making weird noises whenever possible.
SoundsXP: What's the Fanfarlo tipple of choice?
Fanfarlo: Banana smoothies, tea, Brennivín and Blue Rat - it's got all the energy of a rat, trapped in a can.
SoundsXP: What's the most rock n roll thing Fanfarlo have done? Have you ever jumped from an amp stack or hurled a telly out of a hotel window?
Fanfarlo: we did steal Guillemots rider, but in our defense we did think they'd gone home. They didn't seem to believe us though when they caught us walking out of the food tent with pockets full of beers, cans and chocolate.
SoundsXP: Any gigs lined up in the near future?
Fanfarlo: We're having a break right now to record the next single and get some new songs together... but next gig = April 4th @ The Barfly, Camden.
