Top secret cats, girls and karaoke classics are the things that make up an average day for Tim Ten Yen. He has many powers including making me confuse Scritti Polliti with The Police. Curiosity killed the cat but I thought that i'd take my chances and investigate further...
SoundsXP: Your 'side kick' is the sinister cat. Talk to me about the cat situation. Where did that all come from? Or is it top secret?
Tim: It's top secret. All I can say is that I'm his sidekick rather than the other way round.
SoundsXP: So there is Japanese currency in your name and Japan is also mentioned in your lyrics. Do you feel some kind of connection with this country?
Tim: It's my dream to go there some day and play my music to the wonderful people of Japan, though I find their food strange. Very Good strange though.
SoundsXP: 'Girl number one' is a great tune. Is that part autobiographical? Did any bands in particular influence the sound of that song? Sometimes I can hear early traces of Scritti Politti's 'The Word Girl' and the like in there. I am probably completely wrong...
Tim: You are I'm afraid, and I apologise. The Police are my favourite band in the world so I suspect I have may have 'shared' some of their ideas on this record. All my songs are autobiographical.
SoundsXP: Where do you turn to for creative energy?
Tim: Girls.
SoundsXP: On one of your sites you use the word 'karaoke' to describe the live experience. Name me what you consider to be five great karaoke tunes and five dire ones and why.
Tim: Any song where nobody knows the verses will guarantee maximum entertainment and value for money for the audience, which should always be karaoke's ultimate and sincere goal. Examples would be Simply The Best, Bad, Two Hearts and Up Where We Belong. Any high song performed low by an old man is also very powerful, such as Karma Chameleon. There are no dire songs in the world of karaoke.
SoundsXP: Are you a fan of Billy Joel? I would like to see you do a version of 'It's still rock and roll to me' What Joel song would you cover if any?
Tim: Yes I am a very big and loyal fan to Billy Joel, and to that particular song. Unfortunately you will never see me perform that or any other song by him, or any other artist, as I am unable to sing covers.
SoundsXP: 'When the song applies to you' is a toe tapping number. Choose a song from the world's cd collection which you think applies to you and why.
Tim: Thank you. 'Wichita Line Man' because if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain.
SoundsXP: Tim, you're devilishly handsome and a bit of a mover. If they remade 'Saturday Night Fever' would you consider taking on the role of Tony Manero? Do you have any acting skills or other artistic skills?
Tim: Thank you so much, that's very kind! John Travolta has no acting or other artistic skills yet made the role his own. I feel a strong affinity to that so I'd jump at the chance to be involved in a remake, though with all my songs.
SoundsXP: You did a live interview recently on BBC 6 Music. Was that nerve wracking? Not as nerve wracking as answering these questions though, ey?
Tim: Yes it was. I was physically shaking. His producer was a very pretty lady though so I held my nerve.
SoundsXP: You are known as 'One man and his keyboard' (I just made that up) but would you consider using the triangle in your work? If not, why not?!
Tim: Triangles are effectively the Pyramids of Cairo, Egypt, which I'd definitely consider using in my work.
SoundsXP: What are you hoping to achieve with your music and where are you going next?
Tim: I want to be the straight Boy George. The biggest star in the world. And I want to perform in space.
SoundsXP: Finally Tim, sum up the meaning of life for me in ten words. You may ask the cat for assistance if need be.
Tim: Helping to make the world the best place to be.
Well your music is a start young man. Though easy on the 'Travolta has no acting skills' comments. Watch out Boy George. There's a man with a keyboard and he's not afraid to use it. You can catch Tim live mid-November and 'When the song applies to you' is out now. Make it apply to you.
