With Love From The Men's Room Throwing Music

50 Foot Wave - (Mrs) Stephenson's rocket launcher...

Kristin Hersh has a new record out. Really, you want more before you go out and get it? OK…

If anything 50 Foot Wave shade it for me as the finest incarnation of her raw songwriting muse. The five songs on With Love From The Men’s Room get up there in your face nearly as much as the songs from Golden Ocean did. With the Wave Hersh sings as if the words are being torn from her belly against her will while the guitars circle, roll and scour over a thumping drum. And yet the music retains an essential, well if not exactly tunefulness (though there is some of that too) at least sense of light – whether bleeding from the sparks thrown up by the churning or shining through the cracks in the songs. It’s music that makes you want to throw your arms wide and take on the world for all that it does to people.

And so you should.
