The alter ego of Highland singer/ pianist/ violin player Claire Campbell, Abigail Grey’s four-track EP is a sombre yet life-affirming tribute to her Auntie Trish who died of cancer in 2010. The effect of Auntie Trish, who gave Campbell her first piano lesson, is summed up in a line from ‘Dark Wood’: “you stole my heart when my heart was young”. The four tracks of folk-pop include the serene, ‘Water’, complete with trilling piano, and the sweetly sad ‘Shoes’. Campbell is supported on the release by, among others, producer Tony Doogan, which is why it sounds so good, and Chris Geddes (keyboards and percussion), the most musically literate of Belle & Sebastian. So while the EP’s theme is tragic and its tone emotional, the performance is graceful and the effect is ultimately upbeat. A fine tribute indeed.
