Alabama Shakes

Alabama Shakes were the hit of CMJ and are attracting serious bloggage time as everyone tips them for greatness. It’s Southern music (the band hail from Athens, Alabama) which mixes rocky riffs with classic Muscles Shoal soul moves. This four track EP is, hopefully, a harbinger of what’s to come: Brittany Howard’s earthquake soul voice is distinctive on the emotion-filled ‘Hold On’ (you’re reminded that Aretha Franklin recorded in Muscle Shoals), adding gospelly cries to ‘On Your Way’ (“on your way to the promised land”), while the band plays a country-soul groove like the Stones circa Exile On Main Street. The majors have all been sniffing but apparently Rough Trade have snapped them up so this self-released EP is an excellent way to get in on the ground floor. Stuff we’ve seen so far suggest that there’s no smell of b/s like that which clings to the Fakes of Leon so, if they manage to maintain that authentic 60s sound and retain that showstopper of a voice, they could be immense.
