Singles roundup

‘These Days’ (Group Tightener 7”) is a solo single from Alex Bleeker, bassist from New Jersey’s Real Estate (and involving various Real Estate colleagues). The A-side is actually called ‘Getting By’, a wash of warm, slightly wonky, slightly melancholy guitar pop which leaves you tingling like a hug from a big bear. The three songs here have a pretty straightforward sound that reminds you of REM, Miracle Legion and all those guys with guitars – I even sense a vague spirit of Springsteen on ‘Never Going Back’. It doesn’t paint the same canvas as its parent group but this is fine, sensitive lo-fi guitar music. Myspace

Woven Bones’ new release ‘The Minus Touch EP’ on the Dum Dum Girls’/ Crocodiles’ label (Zoo Music 12”) is frazzled, fuzzed up and fucked raw American rock’n’roll. The Jesus and Mary Chain and Velvet Underground readily spring to mind as the Austin, TX band pile on layers of noise, reverb and distortion. The 4 tracks are all worth hearing, but ‘The Minus Touch’ is dark and primitive grinding garage rock while ‘If You’re Gold I’m Gone’ brings out the melody amid the battering fuzzrock rhythms. If someone recorded an aneurism exploding in your brain, this would probably sound something like it. Myspace

Shame that they seem to share most of their name with that repellent penis-shaped Olympic mascot that has just been launched, as they’re not dicks. Boy Mandeville’s debut single ‘Christina’ (Voga Parochia Records) is friendly but undemanding indiepop with a touch of that ubiquitous Afrobeat that young bands have. Like any band of 2009 vintage, it needs time to develop – this is a bit underseasoned at the moment. Myspace

Sixty Watt Bayonets are a female-fronted punk-pop band from Reading. Singer Penny Bayonet has clearly been listening to Karen O but that’s no bad thing on the euphoric 2 minute popthrash of ‘I Wish I Was Your Girlfriend’ (Broken Tail Records). ‘Taking Your Time’ lasts just 30 seconds longer and conjures up fond memories of the ace Be Your Own Pet who burned briefly but brightly a couple of years ago. A good start. Myspace

LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Drunk Girls’ (DFA Records 7”) is great, from its observational lyrics to the swinging Bowie/ Roxy Music rhythms. The Wooden Shjips version on the flipside works as well or even better – it’s droney as you’d expect but it keeps the rhythm and melody, just making them fuzzier. One song, two must-hear treatments. Peter Parker share a single with The Sexual Objects and win it on tune and probably on name too. Peter Parker are a Glasgow band that includes ex-members of Lungleg and Josephine. ‘Pretty Living’ (Lucky Number Nine Records 7”) is great jangly Scot-pop, and comes in a couple of seconds over three minutes, so is nearly perfect. The Sexual Objects are led by Davey Henderson, ex Fire Engines and Nectarine #9. ‘Outta Place Again’ is pure glam rock, echoing T-Rex and Mott the Hoople but it’s a scuffed version of the original so slightly unsatisfying.
