Arcade Fire: The Suburbs / Month of May
The first tracks from the Arcade Fire’s forthcoming album The Suburbs (due August) are available on very limited 12” white label from decent indie shops if you don’t fancy hearing it on a bad quality internet stream. On the basis of a few listens, it’s surprising that the orchestral pop is toned down, though Win Butler’s bleak outlook is still there. ‘The Suburbs’ is carried along by an upbeat barrelhouse piano, and although the lyrics are about as apocalyptic as a Roland Emmerich movie and ends on the repeated line “we’re still screaming”, it’s a fantastically catchy song. ‘Month of May’ is another departure for Arcade Fire, a blast of fast and rhythmic rock that’s suggests the influence of Roxy Music and the Pixies, and might be the thing to inspire a proper mosh at an Arcade Fire gig. The orchestral pop only returns in the form of slightly out of key discordance, right at the end. Beware of people who compare everything they do to the incomparable Funeral and just enjoy the fact that, on this evidence, they're still producing excellent work.
