There’s big talk about this band, which you can confirm or deny if you see them on tour with Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong this and next month. On the evidence of this debut superlimited single, they’re like the Coral if they came from Reading. They have a big, confident, very 60s classic pop sound and they’ve chosen to kick off with a cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘The Future’. They play it at a stomping pace (think The Kinks or The Creation) and manage to do justice to Cohen’s apocalyptic imagery and curious lyrics: “give me crack and anal sex, the only treats that’s left”. It’s a pretty assured, verging on arrogant, performance that impresses. What doesn’t, though, is the B-side, ‘Reveille’, which is a bit of a humdrum Doherty-esque comedown tune. So this jury’s still out, but expect to see Beggars-hype filling the media very soon.
