Best Coast: Where The Boys Are EP
Originally only available as an edition of 200 cassette copies last year, the Where The Boys Are EP is now slightly more accessible on a (still limited edition) CD single. It’s warped summer pop with a hypnotic haziness, burying Bethany’s voice in layers of fuzz and lo-fi wooziness. It’s clear both than these are early Cosentino compositions and also how far she’s progressed in a year or so. ‘Gloomy’ is best of the five tracks, its lovely surfpop melodies almost drowned in sunshiny fuzz. By contrast the single released through headphones makers Eskuché – titled Obsessive Compulsive Frequency Vol 2 - is sonically much clearer (as you’d expect from a sound products company). Only available when you buy their headphones, the songs are Spectorish 60s pop with a punky pop punch. Faster and louder than usual, ‘Faraway’ reminds you a little of the Vivian Girls while the great sense of melancholic longing for your home state marks it out as one the best things Bethany’s done so far – and the sorrowful, 60s girls pop of ‘Everyone’s Gone’ just confirms it.
