Brace/Choir
Five Fingered Leaf Tapete Records

Article written by Ged M - Feb 20, 2014

Brace/Choir are a 4 piece from Berlin who formed in 2006 and describe their sound as trancerock. Whatever they call it, it’s compulsive. I’d describe 'Five Fingered Leaf' (nominally the ‘A-side’) as elemental post-rock, a volcanic mixture of treated guitars, drums and Farfisa organ that bubbles up slowly before reaching boiling point. They gain bonus brainiac points for reworking an Arseny Tarkovsky poem that was featured in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. But the real star of this pairing – as Mary Anne Hobbs on 6Music has already discovered – is ‘Satisfier’; this one really is trancerock, albeit with strong hints of Can and Wire, a relentless seven-and-a-half minute Krautrock rhythm that goes supersonic after about four minutes, exploding into spacey psychedelic effects. This is the one to strap yourself in for.
