Dark End of the Street EP Matador Records, 2x10”

Cat Power’s got soul – just not her own. But two albums’ worth of covers showed that she’s a sympathetic interpreter of other people’s songs, which seems to be a theme of her year. Just as her Jukebox album opened 2008, a double 10” single of versions closes it. First the downside; her version of Otis Redding’s ‘I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)’ doesn’t, couldn’t, work. A cover invites comparison but Otis is incomparable. Likewise Dominic Behan’s classic Irish ballad ‘Ye Auld Triangle’ doesn’t convince. Better is her edgy, accusatory version of Creedence’s ‘Fortunate Son’ and a haunting ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’ (Sandy Denny). She gives a sepulchral take of ‘Dark End of the Street’ where her smoky voice is perfectly backed by the sparse arrangements of her brilliant band, with faint smudge of guitar, distant thrum of percussion and squiggle of organ. Where it works best, she deconstructs the originals and finds the intimacy and soul at their heart and amplifies that in the most moving way - and succeeds more than not on this EP.
