Cate Le Bon
Cyrk II Ovni/ Turnstile 12”

Article written by Ged M - Oct 1, 2012

Cyrk II is more than leftovers from the Cyrk album earlier this year; its five tracks are a strange Welsh brew of psychedelia and acid-folk that captivate with their woozy, after-midnight moods, distinct from the earlier release. There’s a luminous darkness about these songs, from the slabs of fuzz guitar on ‘Seaside, Low Tide’ to the honeyed folk of ‘That Moon’, while Cate runs up the freak-folk flag and leaps to salute it on the weirdly laidback ‘The Eiggy Sea’ (about the sea around the Isle of Eigg, if you were wondering). And her gravelly voice is compelling, sounding like Nico would if John Cale had taught her how to speak English. The spell-casting charm of these melancholy beauties makes Cyrk II as essential as the original album.
