Cold War Kids
Behave Yourself EP iTunes only

Cold War Kids EP
Cold War Kids EP
Deja vu. Deja vu. Cold War Kids have done it again. They've produced a four-track EP of emotive, blues-tinged indie pop gems.

But therein lies the catch. Listening to 'Behave Yourself' will, most likely, have you running to the CD cabinet to check the track listing on the Californian four-piece's debut long player, 'Robbers And Cowards'.

EP opener 'Audience', despite possessing all the pomp of 2007 hit single 'Hang me out to Dry', offers little in terms of progression. It seems the once politically charged indie kids have been loyal to their detriment.

After an ever-so-brief sojourn in dance-rock territory with 2008's sophomore album 'Loyalty to Loyalty', CWK are back where they started. The problem is that neither the lyrical narrative nor the music in these four tracks come close to matching the immediacy or passion that made the band's earliest work so relevant.

'Santa Ana Winds', however, is the saving grace. Its punchy rhythm section, not too dissimilar to Kings Of Leon (just before the middle-aged taxi driver thought they were cool), and singer Nathan Willett's soaring vocal providing some welcome relief.

For a band about to embark on their third studio album with producer Jacquire King (Modest Mouse, Kings Of Leon, Tom Waits), it seems a creative shot in the arm is in order. For any faithful Cold War Kids kids, however, 'Behave Yourself' will offer enough of a hit to keep you going until the third album arrives.

If this was CWK behaving themselves, let's hope Willett and Co can rip it up and create some chaos on album number three.
