An Arcade From the Warm Rain That Falls (Fortuna Pop! 7"

If my house was on fire, high on the list of items I'd choose to save would be my Comet Gain vinyl, those disks of musical pulchritude that combine punk, soul and psych and form an almost unbroken sequence of classic pop singles. Their latest release would fit well with its predecessors. With a title lifted from William Burroughs, the main track is melancholy but uplifting, full of London parks and broken hearts, an anthem to anger and apologies with a soaring chorus. That corking tune is matched on the B side with a soulful and slinky soul cover, a version of Carla Thomas' 'I Take It To My Baby' that motors forward on pulsing bass, cantering drums, voice and handclaps (produced by Edwyn Collins and Ryan Jarman) plus 'You're Just Lonely', an outtake from the album, with a dreamy Feck/Evans duet and sounding like Felt in the 80s. A great single from a Great British Institition.
