Herbert Huncke Germs of Youth 7”

“A poet-bum, majestic junkie…literature is all I have”. That paints a pretty accurate picture of Huncke, the New York heroin-dependent writer who’s the first subject in Comet Gain’s tribute series to beat writers. The glorious Velvet Underground rock’n’roll rhythm is perfect given the junkie rentboy subject matter (“you suck for a buck/ then you shoot up”) and it’s one of Feck’s best trangressive tales, although it’s a horribly limited release on 7”. The other side of Comet Gain is the broken-hearted tales of loss and regret. On this single that means ‘No Spotlite on Sometimes’, a bitter portrait of despair with some of Feck’s darkest lines. With Comet Gain, you can use the words ‘poetry’ and ‘soul’ and not feel that you’re maligning the language; Britain’s greatest group, by a light year.
