The debut single from London’s Crimes of the Future is new wavey electro-pop. They’ve taken their name from one of David Cronenberg’s early movies and some inspiration too; like the director, they write about a fantasy future that’s simultaneously full of detail from a retro past. The same cinematic ambition translates to their songs: they’re full of bold melodies and strike big arty poses. There’s a touch of bands like Echo and the Bunnymen in their expansive gestures, while Sally Moriarty on vocals strikes a cool Kate Jackson ‘femme fatale’ pose within the band. ‘Screen Villains’ is a very catchy first strike but a listen to Myspace will tell you that they’ve got plenty more where that came from.
