Valedictorian/Exoskeleton Thrill Jockey

Like a power pop Xinlisupreme, Dan Friel’s ‘Valedictorian’ single rips out of the speakers in waves of gloriously savage riffing. Less of a song, it’s more like an involuntary, yet tuneful, outburst. The noisiest song I’ve ever heard that you can still whistle, it’s insanely fun and as triumphantly, inclusively joyful as a Jessica Ennis victory lap where the participants have been replaced with jagged blocks of screaming feedback. After the head bashing blast of the preceding song, comes the fallout of the more ruminative ‘Exoskeleton’. The same elements remain but resemble tumbling fragments of masonry after an explosion.

Remixes are handled by Moss of Aura, who reconfigure ‘Exoskeleton’ into a propulsive electro punch full of melancholic synth and pounding drum pads. Peaking Lights blow up ‘Ulysses’ and smear it across a glass pane of psych noise freakiness. If ‘936’ was dub made by people who’d never heard reggae, this is techno by people who don’t know what minimalism is. A fantastic mess of noise and laser gun warble, valiantly and precariously held in check by rumbling subterranean bass lines and an oddly carnival like atmosphere; peacocked dancers replaced by heaving piles of body popping, luridly coloured scrap metal.
