Dan Michaelson and the Coastguards
Love Lends A Hand Editions, 7"

Be quick as there are only very small runs of screen-printed sleeved singles (mine's one of 25 blueys from Rough Trade), a delicious taster for his Shakes album out in October. This is a more pared down Coastguards (the desolate 'Without' on the b-side is little more than a wheeze and a piano), with 'Love Lends a Hand' highlighting Dan's gorgeous gloom-groan baritone, a cross between Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed, offset by a reverby guitar spilling individual notes like tears. Bon Iver goes off to the woods to pick over his heartbreak; Dan Michaelson brings his wilderness with him into the studio, his voice world-wearily dragging his big oft-broken heart behind him. Lovely stuff.
