Darren Hayman & The Secondary Modern
Nothing You Can Do About It Fortuna Pop!

Darren Hayman & The Secondary Modern
Darren Hayman can write simple love songs (the task he set himself here) but his songs have a vernacular poetry that uses familiar imagery in new ways; maybe being married to an English teacher helps. 'Nothing You Can Do About It' is a joyful, expressive love song that doesn't shy away from the base humanity of the individuals who feel the emotion: "we are blood, we are phlegm, we are yellow and black bile!" It's musically inventive too. It contains no electrically amplified instruments, and adds Cor Anglais and oboe, but it still has power and a Hefner-esque catchiness. 'Trees and Leaves' is another love song, to a woman and to Essex ("there are hard times and dog fights in the heart of the countryside") but it's still a beautiful and bittersweet performance, performed with just voice and piano. Comparisons to Ray Davies aren't too far-fetched. (Released 2 August on digital download)
