David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels
Paint The Town EP

Article written by Tom B - Dec 24, 2011

Paint the Town EP
Paint the Town EP
It's been almost two decades since the demise of The Mighty Lemon Drops, a band once lauded as the future of the UK indie scene before the British press kneed them in the groin and no doubt kicked them even more whilst they were still lying on the ground.

Since that time, and after a brief stint in The Blue Aeroplanes, the band's principal songwriter and guitarist David Newton moved across the pond, built himself a studio, producing numerous bands such as The Soft Pack, The Little Ones, Happy Hollows, One Silver Astronaut etc. as well as appearing in the likes of Fonda and Revolux.

However now 19 years on he has finally released a record of his own and in a way it's a nostalgic look to the past with the Thee Mighty Angels moniker as well as the artwork resembling the releases during the Droppies' World Without End to Laughter period which sets the scene nicely.

The title track opener sounds like a 1990's US College radio anthem which rouses from start to finish whilst Bittersweet is catchy guitar based indie rock. The very short, sharp and to the point, This Time echoes back to the Droppies' last album Ricochet whilst Newton reminisces on My First Band complete with humour and some nice riffs.

However the Ep highlight is the JAMC influenced Everything Is Just So which would not be out of place on the flip of a Bubblegum Lemonade single, a fact alone that should guarantee plays by less snobbish indiepop DJs - if such a thing exists!

A steady and most welcome return!

The EP is out now on digital formats. There should be an album in 2012. Newton is now working producing the début LP by the Sweater Girls which is out next year on Happy Happy Birthday To me Records.
