Elephant Stone
Love The Sinner, Hate the Sin self-released download

Elephant Stone is the brainchild of Rishi Dhir of Montreal 60s revivalists High Dials, but this is far, far better than anything by that band. As the name implies, it shamelessly casts a gaze backwards but the result is stunningly catchy nu-retro psych-pop. ‘Love The Sinner, Hate the Sin’ delivers an instant hit of perfect powerpop pleasure in its chiming guitars, pleading vocals and liberating melodies - you’ll fall in love as soon as you hear it (and a free download is available from their site). The other song, ‘The Sea of Your Mind’, is eight-and-a-half minutes of trippy psych-pop – “so many ships have set out on the sea of my mind” – getting progressively freakier and excitable as it goes, and leaving time for a virtuoso sitar break (Dhir’s played sitar for the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Angels and others). Elephant Stone’s second album comes out next year but this ultra-catchy gem makes us want to hear more now.
