Eux Autres/ Shrag
WIAIWYA 7x7 singles club Where It’s At Is Where You Are 7”s

Article written by Ged M - Dec 28, 2012

The final singles in WIAIWYA’s single club this year maintain the quality of earlier rainbow-coloured releases. Portland’s Eux Autres have an grittier take on indiepop; ‘Tilt the Crown’ is riffy but no less melodic and 'Smollis Theme' is a Beatles-inspired instrumental but ‘What It Is’ is the find of the EP. It’s unpredictable pop with hooks hidden around the corners of the song, while Heather Larimer’s voice has a tough not twee twang in her voice compels you to listen. This is a band with history but, on this evidence, the best may yet be to come.

As for the Shrag release, my first thought is: why don’t they print their lyrics? Unlike most indie bands, Shrag’s words and themes are intelligent and intriguing and their music is much the same. ‘Unseasonal Thoughts’ is kaleidoscopic in character; it take a while to set the scene but then really takes off in the second half with layers of synths and a buzztoothed guitar that drags you in. ‘Obscenity Begins At Home’ (great title!) is a frantic Fall-style song with a racing garage-rock riff that will be brilliant live while ‘Gutless Wonder’ is slower and more nuanced, skewering cowards on chiming guitars. As the Canines album this year showed, Shrag’s sound keeps evolving and these three new songs prove that the band are an endless source of fascinating tunes. Roll on singles club 2013!
