Extra Life: Black Hoodie

Extra Life's experimental math rock is a little too academic for my taste. Charlie Looker sounds like Dirty Projectors without the same degree of soulfulness that the latter possess. Having said that, 'Black Hoodie' is curious baroque pop, dark and delicate with acoustic guitar and violin - a lot different to (and better than) the album from which it's drawn. His version of R Kelly's 'Your Body's Callin' is also a big surprise; where the original is sultry R’n’B that screams "I'm horny" with every note, the Extra Life cover is celibate but yearning, Booker's increasingly desperate voice accompanied by carefully plucked electric guitar, conveyed a more sinister meaning than R Kelly's call-to-shag (the 8 minute long version is perhaps too much of a dry wank but the edit works better). Tyondai Braxton of Battles remixes ‘Head Shrinker’ as a heavy-on-the-synths-and-scratching dance track, but one just for chunky spods at the end of term astronomy society party. Overall, it's a bit too mind-bound to enjoy fully.
