Fanfarlo/ Sleeping States

Sleeping States, or Markland Starkie to his mum, turns in an arthouse nu-folk interpretation of a Kristin Hersh song ‘Call Me’ (from Throwing Muses’ 1986 debut ‘In A Doghouse’), the intense atmosphere completed by fingers dragging on nylon guitars strings. But it’s topped by Fanfarlo’s ‘Harold T Wilkins’, an Arcade Fire-ish masterpiece of melodic orchestral pop and storming rhythms. It may be named after a journalist famous in the 50s for chasing UFOs and searching for Atlantis but it’s no fantasy to say that this is Fanfarlo’s best shot so far at anthemic indiepop.
